I just had my profile photo removed today by Facebook. If there's any speculation that this removed photo might actually be obscene, please see below and judge for yourself. This is a photo of me standing in front of my painting titled "Ailen and Jet Jazz." This was at the National Exhibition for the Canadian Institute of Portrait Artists this Septemeber, in which I won "Most Innovative Portrait."
This is the note from Facebook that I received this morning: Hello, You uploaded a photo that violates our Terms of Use, and this photo has been removed. Facebook does not allow photos that attack an individual or group, or that contain nudity, drug use, violence, or other violations of the Terms of Use. These policies are designed to ensure Facebook remains a safe, secure and trusted environment for all users, including the many children who use the site. Okay, now that is just ridiculous. Even your painting in the background would be considered tame. Is there someone in particular who has taken it upon themselves to flag your photos and put you through this? If so, Facebook should find a way to block that individual's obviously harassing complaints.

i had wondered about copyright issues when you posted the Catherine Opie self portrait photo, but this is totally stupid... i'm can only think that you've been red flagged and anything will get you turfed off :( as for 'boobs' or 'butts' what about television/movies/magazines/books? far more there than anything you've posted so far!!!

This is ridiculous. Honestly, I think someone out there has a grudge against your or is just plain-jane jealous of your talent. This person obviously has nothing better to do with their time than to try and cause problems for you. Too bad facebook doesn't let you know who is flagging your photos. I see nothing offensive about ANY of them and I think your work is fantastic. Maybe you should contact facebook and find out what you can do to protect yourself from whoever it is that has such an issue with you and/or your work.

I'm just going to totally lose it at any minute. Someone is picking on you, and it's obscene.

That's just crazy. I've just come from Facebook where one of the guys on my friends page is using a photo of Hitler for his profile pic, "heil" salute and all. I have no problem with it, but how is it that someone can post a photo of Hitler but Mrs. Hansen can't have paintings of her own children? And if nudity is the problem, how come I can turn on the TV and see baby butts used to advertise diapers?

Kate, your art is beautiful and, as hard as it may be, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Stay strong and hopefully the person(s) will eventually leave you alone. My heart goes out to you and I'll support you as much as I can!

A blog on art, roller derby and life.
