I just attended the opening for the Comox Valley Community Arts Council (CVCAC) members show at the Muir Gallery in Courtenay. The title of the show- "Muertos and Marigolds" was for a Mexican Day of the Dead theme, honouring and celebrating those who've passed on. My submission titled "Icon" is actually a self portrait, and didn't have much to do with the Day of the Dead, but I felt it fit the theme at least visually. ![]() I just took a few photos to give an impression of the show. I liked the joyous quality and a feeling of irreverence in the work. Beer bottle caps were combined with crosses and bright colours and flowers with skulls and graves. It did a wonderful job of conveying the levity of Mexican Day of the Dead traditions with some of the more contemplative religious aspects. ![]() The show will be running from October 14th until November 15th so please stop by and check it out. Many of the works are for sale and surprisingly affordable.

A blog on art, roller derby and life.
Kate HansenI'm an artist and mother of two in Courtenay, BC. I've completed a project called the "Madonna and Child Project," and I'm now working on a series of roller derby inspired drawings. In my spare time I play roller derby with the Brick House Betties. Archives
