I kept going into labour four weekends in a row leading up to the birth. I was worried about how we will know for sure unless my water breaks. And if the waters break first will Simon be able to drive down to the Crowsnest Pass from Calgary in time? Sure enough it started with waters breaking. There were no contractions at the time. It was midnight on a Thursday night. I tried not to get too excited and accelerate labour before Simon got home. Once I started having contractions I sat in the bath and my friend Arlene came round to stay with me and with sleeping Mina.
We went to the hospital around 4:30am. It progressed pretty fast. Strangely, compared to giving birth the first time, my labour pains were very mild. So mild that I never felt I was in that zone. When my doctor said I had been fully dilated for three hours and it was time to push, I really didn't feel I was ready. I was much too aware of my surroundings. There was no way my endorphins had kicked in. I didn't want to do it. But in the end we pushed and within 20 minutes Finbar came out. He surprised us all by his size. I was quite small looking pregnant and no one suspected we would have a baby above 8lb. He looked so ready with perfect skin and three weeks early. He was beautiful. I had only minor tears, no stitches and I felt fantastic the next day.
