Gladys was born and raised in Kenya, but now lives in Canada with her Canadian husband. The following is an emergency caesarean birth.
“Born and raised in Kenya, my name is Gladys Katanu Mwanza and I am a 30 year old woman. I spent most of my pregnancy time in Kenya while awaiting a visa to Canada. I always wanted to have a natural birth. When my husband and I moved to Canada, my in-laws came to be with me during the birth of my child.
I was two weeks overdue at the night of November 23rd 06 when my labour started. It was in the middle of a bad winter storm and very cold. My in-laws drove me to the hospital as my husband was undertaking training at Cranbrook, AB.
The hospital staff were very nice to me and tried their best to help me achieve what I wanted, a natural birth. They helped me with different positions. I remember how I was feeling cold and they kept supplying me with warm blankets. One time the nurse made me laugh by asking me ''did this man promise you heaven.” I think she could not understand how I would leave a warm country to a cold one.
I had labour all night and my water did not break so eventually the doctor broke it. I did not dilate well and finally I had to have caesarean.
By 1.30pm on 24th November my baby was born. She was 7 pounds 12ounces.The joy of seeing her surpassed everything I had undergone. Every new day I see her am happy to be her mother.”
